The Best Self Tanning Lotions Give You Great Tans Without Harming Your Skin

By Haywood Hunter

The sun's UV rays may produce a lovely tan however they can also do considerable damage to the skin, which causes premature aging and even skin cancer. Yet people still desire the look of a sexy, bronzed tan, which is where using the best self tanning lotions comes in. These products are the perfect solution for achieving a deeper skin tone for those who are naturally fair or simply don't want to risk harming their skin.

It can be confusing for someone who has never bought such a product before to pick one since more companies than ever before have jumped on the sunless tanning bandwagon and are all claiming that their product is better than the rest. Searching for some online reviews of various self tanners is a good way to get some idea as to which are worth trying and which ones are not. Sticking with natural formulas that moisturize and nourish the skin while producing a lovely, natural color is the best bet, as no one wants to look "orange".

Although sunless tanners come in different forms such as lotions, mousses, and sprays, the former are the old stand-by and continue to be the most popular as they are easiest to apply and less likely to look streaky. Those who are new to using these products should start with the lotions as they will give better results. After applying any of these formulas, it's advisable to not put on light colored clothing as sometimes it may get stained.

The primary ingredient common to practically all self tanning lotions is dihydroxyacetone or DHA. Naturally derived from raw sugar, DHA is able to produce darker pigmentation in the skin when it reacts with the top layer of epidermal cells. This "tan" will gradually fade, but it can last as long as one week. Products claiming to produce a darker tan, contain higher amounts of DHA than regular formulas.

Before applying the tanner, doing a full-body exfoliation is recommended for several days. Any areas of tough, dry skin should be given extra attention, sloughing them off will prevent darker patches from forming when the tanning lotion is applied. This will ensure an even, natural-looking coat of color throughout the entire body.

A darker tint is added to many of these lotions to allow for more precise application. It is easier for the user to see if he or she has too much or too little tanner by the presence or absence of the lotion's bronze tint. The tinting effect fades however, usually washing away after one showers, the actual tan is produced from the reaction of the skin cells to the DHA.

When applying the self tanner, users should wash or wipe off the palms of the hands or wear gloves to avoid them becoming stained. It may be necessary to get another person to apply the product to one's back and usually the face should be treated with caution when applying tanner, it's best to use a formula made especially for faces to get good results.

Some users complain about the odor of sunless tanning formulas which can hang about for days, but these are typically the inferior, artificial blends that produce this issue. Naturally-based product lines are pleasantly scented and this light aroma fades in a few minutes in most cases anyhow.
